Created in 1970, the Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State is located in the North central zone of Benue State. The local government shares boundaries with Guma Local Government Area to the North-East, Gwer to the South, Gwer-West to the West and Doma local government area of Nasarawa State to the North-West. The local government area is divided into two major blocks by River Benue hence the North and South Banks. It has a population of 226,198 (1991 census) with a landmass of 16 km radius. Makurdi town, the headquarters of the local government also serves as the state capital. Its location can best be described as the “Gateway” of the state to both the North and South. All forms of transportation as road, rail air and water are obtainable in Makurdi to reach their destinations.

Makurdi local government, as a council area, has a statutory duty to its people in the area of the provision of social amenities and development. Hence, it has to generate revenue internally to meet up with the needs of its people. The local government has thus established markets to promote trade and commerce, and in turn, earn revenue to execute its projects. These markets are North-Bank, Wadata, Wurukum, High-Level, Fiidi, Yaikyo, Anter, and the Village market at the Modern Market. The local government also shares with Benue Cement worth one million Naira. The local government depends on these markets for its internally generated revenue to augment its statutory allocation from the federation accounts.

Makurdi local government is endowed with great investment potentialities both in agro-allied and mineral resources. The rural populace is predominantly agrarian. Hence, the local government produces fruits such as oranges and mangoes in commercial quantity. These fruits provide ready raw materials for juice producing companies in the country. Other crops such as yams, cassava, soybeans, groundnuts, rice and sweet potatoes are also produced in commercial quantities. The establishment of a fertilizer blending plant in Makurdi by the state government will further boost agricultural products when completed.

In the area of mineral resources, limestone is found in commercial quantity stretching from Ankpa quarters to Adaka area. When exploited, this will provide raw materials for cement factory. Barites and glass sand are also found in large quantity in Agan area of the council. Presently, an unorganized exploitation of the mineral is being carried out by local individual prospects for sales to prospecting companies in the country. Salt is found in Bar ward, sand from River Benue and clay on its banks. While sand us used for block industries, clay is used for burnt bricks considered one of the best in modern architectural and building construction.

The availability of good road network, telecommunication services, water and electricity makes industrial investment in the local government area attractive to investors. The connection of the state to the national grid on the 330kv will boost power output when completed. Any investor, willing to invest in the area will therefore have a ready enabling environment.
