Governor Samuel Ortom has directed the state commissioner of finance and economic planning, Mr. David Olofu to calculate all the match bonuses and other entitlements owed Lobi Stars with a view to clearing them.
He gave the directive yesterday at the New Banquet Hall of Benue Peoples House, Makurdi during a courtesy call by the team, which was recently crowned champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL.
Governor Ortom stated that the players had exhibited uncommon resilience and commitment to emerge winners of the 2017/2018 NPFL, noting that his administration remains committed to the promotion of football.
He noted that football the world over, symbolises love and unity, stressing that his decision to revive the yearly Governor’s Football Cup Competition was deliberate and meant to groom the youth in sporting activities.
The Governor who stated that the victory had brought joy to the state after several months of sorrow occasioned by herders attacks on Benue communities said a banquet would be organized to celebrate the champions in due course.
While congratulating the team over the victory, the Governor prayed that the victory marks the beginning of more celebrations in the state, expressing the hope that the flood predicted in Benue would also be averted.
Deputy Governor and chairman of the club, Engr. Benson Abouno, while presenting a letter from the NPFL crowning Lobi Stars champions to the Governor said Governor Ortom had sent them out with the best support and behold, they had gone and conquered.
Vice Chairman of Lobi Stars, Mr. Mike Idoko, said the team was crowned champions of the NPFL after playing twenty four matches and coming top with forty three points.
He appealed to Governor Ortom to pay the arrears of bonuses owed the players, even as he expressed optimism in the ability of the champions to win the Confederation of African Football, CAF, tournament.
He also congratulated the head coach, players and other supporting staff of the team for their outstanding performance during the league matches, stressing that they were determined for victory even if the league had ran to the end.
Captain of the team, Mr. Anthony Agbaji, expressed appreciation to Governor Ortom for the love shown them, saying they were proud to be crowned champions of the NPFL under the Governor.
