Wife of the Benue State Governor, Dr Eunice Ortom, yesterday visited victims of the recent fuel tanker fire disaster at Gbatse, in hospitals in Ushongo town and donated relief items to them.
The items included 20 bags of beans, 10 bags of rice, 10 cartons of detergents and bathing soaps, as well as five bags of gari.
She assured the victims that the state government would assist in paying their hospital bills even as she gave financial assistance to the families of the deceased.
The First Lady expressed the condolences of her husband who she said visited some of the victims at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and also approved her visit.
Dr Ortom visited Oostra Gum where she saw 16 patients and City Clinic where there were five.
She and her entourage comforted and prayed with the patients.
They also paid homage on the traditional rulers in the area led by the First Class Ruler of the Kwande Intermediate Area, Chief Ambrose Iyortyer.
Dr Eunice Ortom spoke with families of the deceased at the palace of Tor Kwande’s Palace.
The Ter Ushongo, Chief Augustine Kuma, commended the first family for responding swiftly to the plight of the victims pointing out that the response was comforting to the victims and the people of the area.
The Tor Kwande, Chief Iyortyer, expressed regret that the disaster occurred because his warning and that of the police that people should stay away from where the petrol tanker had an accident fell on deaf ears but commended the First Lady and her husband for their efforts to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
District Head of Mbayegh, Chief Nathaniel Hoyo, disclosed that by the time of the visit 13 victims had died while 42 out of the 52 affected were in various hospitals.
