Born on December 27 th , 1953 in Wannune, Tarka local government area, Dr. George Akume received his early education at the Native Authority Primary School, Wannune, 1960-67; Government Secondary School, Otobi, which is now Model Science Secondary School, Otukpo, 1967-71; and proceeded to the St. Louis College, Jos for the Higher School Certificate.
He graduated from the University of Ibadan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 1978 and later obtained a Masters degree in Industrial and Labour Relations in 1986. Dr. Akume also attended the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, ASCON, where he obtained a certificate in management in 1988.
He worked as Lands Officer, Assistant Secretary, Research and Policy Analysis, Director of Personnel Management and Sole Administrator of Idah and Gboko local government areas, Director of Protocol as well as Permanent Secretary in the services of the Benue State Government.
He was also seconded to the Federal Ministry of Education as a Deputy Director. Dr. Akume who served as Governor of Benue State for two terms on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party was also elected Senator, Benue North West Senatorial District on the party’s platform.
He is married with children.
