Governor Alia Hosts Global Peace Mediators in Effort to Resolve Local Conflicts

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, warmly received the leadership of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) at the Government House in Makurdi, Benue State in a significant move towards fostering peace and reconciliation.

The event took place at the EXCO Extension Hall, Government House, Makurdi on 16th July, 2024.

The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), renowned for its mediation efforts in challenging conflict zones globally since 1999, has been instrumental in Nigeria, particularly in laying the groundwork for enduring peace and cooperation among diverse communities.

The meeting demonstrates the collaborative efforts between the Benue State Government and HD in addressing longstanding grievances and promoting sustainable peace initiatives across the state. Governor Alia expressed gratitude for HD’s commitment to peace-building, recognizing their invaluable contributions to conflict resolution strategies in Nigeria, particularly in Jos, Kaduna, and our very own Agatu, Konshisha, and Oju, which has laid a foundation for lasting peace and cooperation among our communities.

HD’s approach, which emphasizes inclusive dialogue and community engagement, has proven effective in navigating complex social and political landscapes, fostering trust, and mitigating tensions among diverse ethnic and religious groups.

Speaking after the meeting, a representative from HD reiterated the organization’s dedication to supporting local stakeholders in their pursuit of peace, affirming their ongoing partnership with Benue State authorities to advance reconciliation efforts and promote stability.

The visit by HD’s leadership to Benue State signals a renewed focus on enhancing social cohesion and resilience in the face of persistent challenges, demonstrating a shared commitment to building a peaceful future for the good people of Benue.

As discussions continue, the collaboration between Benue State and HD remains pivotal in shaping sustainable peace frameworks that address root causes of conflict and uphold the dignity and rights of affected communities.
